Scholarship Description
The Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities and Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. are pleased to announce the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. Founders Fund Scholarship. This merit scholarship in the amount of $3,500 is offered annually in the name of the TGF founders, to a single recipient who has demonstrated excellence and outstanding dedication in a field of study that falls within an environmental field of a school or department. It was the hope of these men, as it is the hope of the current membership of Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, that the recipient will use this scholarship to further their studies and after graduation, seek employment in the tri-state region in either the public or private sector furthering the cause of environmental protection and riparian habitat conservation for the benefit of all.
This scholarship is available to students enrolled in a full-time four year undergraduate degree or graduate degree program at a member institution of the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities. The applicant must major in an area of environmental studies such as but not limited to ecology, hydrology, conservation biology, natural resource management, zoology or environmental law and policy. To be eligible, the student must have completed at least two of the four years of undergraduate program as a minimum for consideration. Based on a 4.0 scale, the applicant must demonstrate merit with a current 3.5 GPA in the environmental concentration courses and an overall minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens only.
Having received a TGF scholarship in the past does not prohibit future eligibility. A student may be awarded more than one consecutive TGF scholarship. However, priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a TGF scholarship.
Application Procedures
To apply for the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. Founders Fund Scholarship, please submit the following to the Environmental Consortium:
(1) A completed application;
(2) An essay specifying career objectives of the applicant in no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words. Be creative. How will your objectives address a current environmental issue?
(3) Two letters of professional recommendation, one of which should come from the department chair, and one from a professional administrator who has supervised the applicant in a work related position.
(4) Official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended - including undergraduate if applicant is a graduate student.
Timetable
Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 1st , 2009 at the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities office located at Pace University, 861 Bedford Road, Choate 221N, Pleasantville, New York, 10570. Please note that applications must be hand delivered or mailed with sufficient time to be received by the deadline.
The final selection will be judged anonymously by a selection committee. The committee’s decision shall be final. All candidates will be informed of the outcome of the selection process no later than May 5th , 2009.
The committee will not return submitted essays and said essays may not be submitted elsewhere until the awards have been announced. The winning essay becomes the property of The Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. The winner will be expected to accept their award in person at the TFG Conservation Fundraiser Dinner in September 2009, in Roscoe, NY.

About Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc.
The Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. is a not for profit angling organization, founded on American fly fishing traditions, promoting stream and river protection and self-sustainable salmonid populations through conservation, environmental oversight, activism, catch-and-release practices, and education. TGF was founded in 1963 by a group of farsighted men who saw a great need to bring about an organization of sportsmen who would use their collective voice and resources to protect and conserve cold-water fisheries and riparian habitat in the greater Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and more recently Connecticut. The twenty-one founding members of TGF, many of whom were famous in their own right, were all dedicated fly fishers and conservationists. They are:
Mr. Arnold Gingrich: Author, founding editor and publisher of Esquire Magazine, Director of RASA (Restoration of Atlantic Salmon in America), who fished with Charles Ritz, Charlie Fox, John Dos Passos, and Ernest Hemingway .
Mr. Lee Wulff: Author, bush pilot, movie maker, creative fly tier, inventor, consultant to the American Sportsman TV program, world renowned salmon and trout authority, and the voice of conservation.
Mr. Joseph A. Pisarro: Communications Director for the National Council of YMCA’s. President of TGF in 1965 and served three annual terms and also served as Secretary of TGF and as a member of the Board of Directors. He established the Arnold Gingrich Literary Heritage award and promoted TGF as a club, active in environmental conservation rather than as a social organization. He is now residing in Vermont.
Mr. Theodore Rogowski: Second President of TGF, Charter Trustee and Executive Vice President of the Federation of Fly Fishers, Senior Water Counsel Federal Water Pollution Control Agency and for the Environmental Protection Agency during the Nixon Administration. An author of the “Clean Water Act "
Mr. Donal C. O’Brien, Jr: Former Special Assistant and advisor to Governor Nelson Rockefeller and a great supporter of this fund,
Mr. R. G. (Ed) Zern: Humorist, writer, author, and conservationist,. TGF’s first President.
Mr. Keith Fulsher: renowned fly tier and conservationist.
Dr. Ernest Schwiebert: Award-winning architect and author of more than nine books on the subjects of world sporting travel and trout and salmon fishing.
Mr. David Kramer: Attorney, author, and conservationist
Col. Henry Siegel: US Army Retired, conservationist, and fly fisherman
Mr. Walter C. Khem: Chief patent attorney for the Union Carbide Company, second Conservation Committee Chairman, and President of TGF for one term.
Mr. Donald Leyden: Noted artist, fly tier and speaker. Co-developed the TGF Arts of Angling program.
Mr. Richard P. Grossenbach: artist, and specialist in portraiture. Co-developed the popular TGF Arts of Angling program.
Mr. Eugene Anderegg: Was the chief representative for Ernest Leitz Optics in the US. President of TGF for one term and a founder the Federation of Fly Fishers and one of its early Presidents.
Mr. Erwin Edelman: Worked for Time Magazine, dedicated fly fisherman and conservationist. Helped establish The Rainbow Press. Now resides in Florida and is actively pursuing conservation issues and fly fishing in salt water.
Mr. Joseph Kleckner: A business broker who arranged for the sale and purchase of companies. TGF’s first Business Advisor and Treasurer.
Mr. Stanley Bryer: A conservation attorney. First TGF Conservation Committee Chairman,. Led TGF's early conservation and environmental involvements.
Mr. Eugene E. Kelly: Charter Member and dedicated conservationist and angler.
Mr. David H. Brophy: Charter Member and dedicated conservationist and angler.
Mr. Norman Miller: Charter Member and dedicated conservationist and angler.
Mr. Richard Robinson: Charter Member and dedicated conservationist and angler.

About Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges & Universities
The Environmental Consortium, founded in 2004, is comprised of forty institutions of higher education in the Hudson Valley region. Its mission is to help shape the future of the regional and global environment through collaboration, education, and research. It uses the Hudson watershed as an extended laboratory and classroom for multi-institutional field programs, K-16 teacher training, interdisciplinary research collaborations, cooperative regional studies, and campus greening.
