Become
a Life Member, Benefit the Founders Fund, and Enjoy a Chilean Fly Fishing
Adventure. The TGF Founders Fund has been organized to provide capitol for
various higher educational assistance efforts in the environmental
conservation arena. The fund currently sponsors the TGF Founders Fund
Scholarship. A merit scholarship that is awarded each year to an
exceptional graduate or undergraduate student of the environmental arts or
sciences. The Board of Directors are trying to find creative ways to help
this fund eventually grow to benefit the environmental education community
in a larger way by offering grants and fellowships to worthy practitioners
of the conservation arts and sciences working in the greater New York Area
and beyond. Southern Chile Expeditions, one of TGF’s Premium Small
Business Members, has made a magnanimous offer which will benefit the
Founders Fund greatly. Mr. Michael L. Darland, the owner and founder of
SCE has offered TGF a trip for two to one of his two first class fishing
lodges in Chilean Patagonia for two rods to be taken during their 2007-08
season. This adventure of a lifetime offer is available to members of TGF
and non-members. 50% of the proceeds of the trip will go to the TGF
Founders Fund.
Your Patagonia adventures begin in one of two principal
fly-fishing expedition bases.
Each is situated on a lake.
Destination
#1: Yankee Way Lodge (Click
here to view the website) Yankee Way Lodge is a 5 star resort located in Central
Chile in Region 10 also known as the Lakes District outside of Puerto Varas on the edge of Lago Llanquihue. The lodge itself is sited in a
twelve acre forest on the edge of the lake and at the foot of one of one
of (Click here to view the website) the most beautiful dormant volcanoes
in the world; Volcano Osorno. Rodrick Haig Brown fished this country and
wrote about it in his story called “Period Piece” published in The Gordon
Garland in 1965 and offered further writings in his now famous Fisherman’s
Winter.

The lodge specializes in luxury fishing adventures on some of the
finest lakes and rivers of Central Chile. Rivers include but are not
limited to the Petrohue River, The Maullin River, and Lago Todos Los
Santos ( All Saints Lake). Yankee Way also boasts many activities for the
non-angler. This is the perfect place for groups, families and couples to
come and relax, enjoy great fishing and/or indulge in a variety of outdoor
activities.
YAN KEE WAY lodge is located on Lago Llanquihue ( Log-o zhan
kee way), near the small town of Ensenada, Chile. The lake has a resident
population of large browns and rainbows. Resident and migratory coho, king
and Atlantic salmon make this their water as well. Nearby rivers and
streams of Lago Todos Los Santos in the Vincente Perez Rosales National
Park are 15 minutes away. The nearby Rio Petrohue, described by Roderick
L. Hague-Brown in his book “Fisherman’s Winter,” is home to large brown
and rainbow trout, which are supplemented by sea-run brown trout,
Steelhead, Coho, King, and Atlantic salmon. Horseback expeditions, if you
are so inclined, provide access, through native Chilean forests, to
beautiful lakes and streams off the beaten path.

Yankee Way Lodge provides
first class accommodations with its very private cabins and chalets
quietly nestled in its park like setting provides the ultimate in comfort
and privacy in pastoral surroundings. Softly lit pathways provide guest
access to the Lodge’s campus and its various facilities including a 4 star
restaurant named Latitude 42° that has justly earned the accolade from Frommers of being “the finest restaurant in all of Southern Chile.” Having
been there and sampled their entire menu, this reporter can attest to the
veracity of this statement. The food and wine are superb.

The views from
the restaurant and the common rooms are breathtaking with the Volcano a
mile or so across the lake and the spectacular sunsets in the west. Lago
Llanquihue with it’s 197 Kilometers of coastline and 330 Square miles of
area represents the largest lake in Chile and is home to a booming fruit
and flower industry. Wineries also pervade the area and the local vintages
are unknown in the US and quite superb. Even the house wines are of
excellent quality.

Located
some 700 to 800 miles south of the Yankee Way Lodge, the El Patagon
experience offers anglers many choices. Prime fishing is to be had on six
rivers, four lakes and saltwater estuary fishing is available. Abundant
water flow in the spring allows anglers to float the smaller rivers and as
the season progresses, low water levels encourage more wading. Many of
these waters were not regularly fished until the guides and management of
Southern Chile Expeditions developed new techniques and brought in
specialized boats.
The beauty, serenity, and remoteness of the area provides an unanticipated
bonus. It is a wilderness with very little infrastructure. Having a
comfortable place to return to at the end of the day is key to a great
fishing experience. The founders of Southern Chile expeditions were
determined to find the right piece of land for a Patagonian fly-fishing
lodge. They wanted a base of operations with easy access to the fishing
and one that would allow their guests to enjoy the personal comforts
necessary to appreciate this area to the fullest. Natural resources to
facilitate sport adventure and cultural expeditions were important
determinants, as they offer a broad range of activities for their guests.

The property is almost 5 square miles of land area and is sited on 3,000
private acres of temperate rainforest. Its location provides an excellent
base of operations. The Rio Figueroa, shown above, is but a few steps from
your Cabin. The grounds extend for several miles along the Figueroa River
and front a mile of Lago Rosselot. These waters are home to rainbow, brown
and brook trout. In addition, sea-run browns, Coho, King, and Atlantic
salmon frequent these waters. Both beginning and advanced anglers will
enjoy fly-fishing here. Anglers new to the sport, have the potential to
catch more wild fish than would be possible on a well-stocked trout farm!
With proficient casting skills, an angler can (and most likely will) catch
a number of trophy trout. Dry and wet flies yield equally well.
El
Patagon was designed to comfortably accommodate eight fly-fishing guests.
There are four separate red roofed cabins. Each cabin has a full bath with
shower, built-in closets and a wood-burning stove. These cabins were
designed with your comfort in mind. You'll find great beds, down
comforters, comfortable furniture, oriental rugs, fluffy towels and
endless hot water, and there's a special drying room for your fishing gear
and clothing. What more could one ask for in the middle of nowhere? For
those who chose a rustic atmosphere we have installed kerosene lanterns
that you may use in lieu of electricity. The dining room and lounge at EL PATAGON is a 30-foot diameter yurt from Pacific Yurts in Oregon.
